How to Get Your Dog to Like Their Halloween Costume (3 Steps)

You bought a costume for Halloween and your dog is not sold on it yet.
The easiest fix is to put part of that costume on for things they already love. Dinner. A potty break. A treat. Play. After a few days, what you put on starts to mean good things are coming. Here are 3 steps, about 2 minutes a day.
Step 1: Start with one easy part of the costume
Use one piece of the costume they will actually wear — usually the body piece. Skip the head, anything over the eyes, or around the muzzle until the body piece is easy. If there are loose buttons or strings, pull them off before you start.
Step 2: Put it on when the good thing starts
Put that costume piece on right as the good thing begins. Use one or two of these each day:
- Dinner or breakfast
- Going outside to potty
- A special treat
- A short play session (tug or fetch inside)
Costume on → good thing starts. That is how this costume becomes something they look forward to.
Step 3: When the good thing ends, costume comes off
The second dinner, potty, the treat, or play is over, take that costume piece off. Fun stops with the activity. Same rule every time:
- Costume on → play starts. Play is over → costume off.
- Costume on → dinner starts. Dinner is done → costume off.
- Costume on → potty trip. Back inside → costume off.
If they freeze, paw at it, or stop taking food, take it off and try again next time with a shorter wear. Never leave them alone in it.
What if I only have a few days?
Even two or three pairings before Halloween (dinner in the costume piece, play in the costume piece) is enough to help. You do not need a long training plan. You need that costume tied to good things a few times, and off when those things end.
If it's not working
- Still struggling? Use a smaller part of the same costume and keep sessions shorter.
- Only hates the hat? Leave the hat off and keep working the body piece.
- Out of time tonight? One dinner or one play session with the easy piece still counts.
The quick version
- One easy part of their costume first — no headgear yet.
- That piece on when dinner, potty, a treat, or play starts.
- That piece off the second that good thing ends.
- Repeat a couple minutes a day.
If holiday chaos is bigger than one costume, our Good Dog Project enrichment visits give a full hour of Move, Train, and Sniff.
